The month of May is special for us to pay homage to our Blessed Mother Mary. We have prayers for different occasions and intentions. We believe that Mary has a unique role in salvation history as the Mother of God, conceived without sin, and by her own free will agreed to bring the "word made flesh", our Lord Jesus Christ into the world.
Her life in the gospel was one of service and devotion to Jesus, from the cave in Bethlehem where she gave birth to him, to Calvary in Jerusalem where she stood by His cross in His crucifixion.
While she is not mentioned many times in the gospel, her words resound with us today and challenge us to follow her example of humility, obedience and service to God. Her words were always to do the will of God, such as "Behold the handmade of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word." (Luke 1:38) "My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior."(Luke 1:46-47) And at the Wedding Feast at Cana, "Do whatever he tells you."
Mary lived a life full of grace and wishes to share those graces with us. She is the mediator between God and us. She can intercede with us and for us.
"O Mary, my dear Mother, how much I love you! And yet in reality how little! You do teach me what I ought to know, for you teach me what Jesus is to me and what I ought to be for Jesus. Dearly beloved Mother, how close to God you are, and how utterly filled with Him! In the measure that we know God, we remind ourselves of you. Mother of God obtain for me the grace of loving my Jesus; obtain for me the grace of loving you!"
